Dedications [039]

Encoding dedications using <div type="dedication">; distinguishing between dedications and other prefatory material

The WWP uses <div type="dedication"> to encode dedications, and observes the distinction between dedications and acknowledgements described in TEI: a dedication is “a formal offering or dedication of a text to one or more persons or institutions by the author.” Dedications may occur within the front matter, either as prose or poetry, or they may occur at the beginning of individual sections of the body (for instance, a dedicatory poem preceding a longer poem).

We only use <div type="dedication"> to encode things which are unambiguously dedications; if a section of the front matter is not clearly a dedication it should be encoded as <div type="prefatory">.
