Project Consultation

The WWP offers advice and assistance to other digital humanities projects. We focus particularly on smaller projects and individual faculty members who do not have access to digital humanities expertise at their own institutions. Our areas of greatest expertise are in scholarly text encoding, digital project management, documentation, and XML-based interfaces. We are always happy to answer questions and provide general advice, and we have some resources available as well that may be useful. For more substantial consultation (for instance, a year-long collaboration involving several meetings) we need to be able to cover the cost of our time. If you have questions or need help developing a project there are several ways we may be able to help you:

Plan a consultation visit

In a two- or three-day meeting with your project there are many useful things we can help you accomplish: training encoders, planning a grant proposal, preparing project documentation, developing a TEI customization, facilitating a meeting with collaborators. We make site visits but are also happy to host meetings or extended training visits at the WWP office in Boston. Please contact us at to discuss what you need and how we can help.

Include us in a grant proposal

If you are planning a grant-funded project with a text encoding component, it may be helpful to include some funding for consultation in the grant budget. We can help with the development of encoding specifications, encoder training, documentation, and overall project planning. We give priority to projects that harmonize with our own research interests, but in cases where we can’t help you ourselves, we may be able to help identify other consultants with expertise in your area of need. Please contact us at for more information.

Host a WWP seminar

We are happy to hold a text encoding seminar at your institution. This is a good option if there are several colleagues or groups of people working on projects who might be interested in learning text encoding. We have some standard curricula that we can use, but we are also happy to develop seminars on special topics to suit local needs. We can also combine a seminar with more targeted project consultation. Please contact us at for more information on scheduling and costs.

Attend a WWP Seminar

We offer introductory seminars and workshops in text encoding at intervals throughout the year. These are often a good way to get some initial advice and feedback on your project, not only from the WWP but also from other participants. During the seminar we’ll have a chance to talk with you about your project in a preliminary way, and determine what further steps are needed. Please see our seminar schedule for a complete list of upcoming events.
